How To Discover A New Hobby

Hobbies are about spending time on a special interest one personally enjoys. It’s time spent where you get your cup filled. It brings one joy and contentedness, privately enjoyed or open for others to join in. It could involve collecting special items, visiting places, or connecting with new people.

Many can benefit from practicing a new hobby. It’s something one could look forward to in the midst of the mundane, it could be a cure for boredom, or it could be that spark of light during a trying and dark time. I gravitated towards hobbies during a trying time in my life. I had just been let go of my dream job due to company reorganizing, and my finances were tight (if you’re going through something similar I recommend reading More Than Just Making It: Hope for the Financially Frustrated by Erin Odom). My usual time of self-comfort of bookstore browsing and book shopping were off limits, so I looked around to what I did have and searched for ways to enjoy my time.

I wanted to cheer up my soul with new decorations around my home. I had tons of crafting material of papers with patterns, tissue paper of the entire color spectrum, ribbon, a hot glue gun, tape, pencils, a ruler, and markers. I learned to make paper garlands, mini-pumpkins for the fall, banners of tassels for party decorations, and scripture cards. Not being in a place to buy birthday presents, I made birthday banners and decorations. This new hobby of mine fit for the season I was in and I’m grateful for those beautiful moments.

Before that time, crafting wasn’t something I geared towards, but I followed that tug in my heart to create something. Do you need something new to look forward to? Here are a couple of hobby ideas I think you should give a try:

Sending postcards.

I love getting personal letters and packages in the mail from close friends and family. When you think of the time, effort, and thought someone put into gathering items or sealing an envelope makes you appreciate someone who clearly appreciates you. Send someone that message by sending a postcard or a “thinking of you” letter. It can be as simple or elaborate as you want, but it can connect you with others on a more personal and deeper level.

Crocheting and knitting.

If you are looking for a whole new way to challenge yourself, pick up a crochet hook or knitting needles and yarn! You will not be alone in picking up this new skill. There are a plethora of tutorials and informative videos on YouTube, how-to books, and communities (virtual or in person). I love crocheting to wind down, to challenge myself, and to make something beautiful.

Visitng various places.

When my husband and I first started dating we would go on dates visiting different coffee shops in the city. We used an app that located different coffee shops and we would browse locations to decide which coffee shop we would visit next. Do you have a favorite treat? Scout out different places you can visit to enjoy that treat with someone or for some alone time. Whether it’s ice cream shops, bookstores, tea lounges, wine bars, or any other niche item, it’ll be an adventure!
