Few things in the kitchen are as remarkably versatile as a dutch oven. Throw it on the stove and make a delicious stew, bake your own heavenly loaf of sourdough, or whip together a delightful pasta dish to feast upon — the dutch oven can do it all.

But one of the best ways to use a dutch oven? For dessert-related purposes, of course. Dessert ought to never be skipped, even on days when we can only afford a few small bites of it.

And what better way is there to welcome the swift arrival of autumn than with a sweet, lovely helping of apple cobbler, topped with some vanilla ice cream? This incredibly simple yet tasty recipe takes 60 minutes to prepare and bake, and serves 8.

The Ingredients:

  • 6-8 large apples (peeled + sliced)

  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon

  • 1 cup sugar

  • 1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour

  • 3/4 cup brown sugar

  • 1 teaspoon baking powder

  • 2 eggs, beaten

  • 2/3 cup melted butter

  • pinch of salt

  • vanilla ice cream (technically optional)

How to make a Dutch Oven Apple Cobbler:

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. In a Dutch oven, combine the apples, 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon, and 3/4 cups of the sugar. In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, brown sugar, baking powder, salt, and the remaining 1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon and 1/4 cup of sugar. Stir in the eggs to your dry mix and spoon it evenly over the apple mixture. Lightly brush butter over the top without stirring. Cover and bake for 40-50 minutes, or until golden brown on top. Serve topped with ice cream.
