Here at Wallflower, we like to think we’ve fostered a community of readers who’d consider themselves voracious readers, lovers of literature. And while we truly love recommending our favorite books to you, dear reader, and curating all kinds of book lists for you to find your next read, we also know that the readers of Wallflower have some of the best book recommendation we could possibly ask for. Which is why we started a series of articles that showcase the various books our readers have been loving lately.

01 | The Scent of Water by Elizabeth Goudge

Mary suddenly decides to leave the city life she’d been living in London for the English countryside when her aunt leaves an old home to her. There, she gains a deeper understanding of herself, her past, her late aunt, and the power of love and redemption. Goudge is very much a favorite among the Wallflower crowd, so you can’t go wrong with one of her books.

02 | Kristin Lavransdatter by Sigrid Undset

Set in fourteenth-century Norway, Kristin Lavransdatter tells the tale of a young girl who, upon falling in love with the reckless, handsome Erlend, defies her parents and embarks on a life with him. Eventually, their world is plummeted into uncertainty. One of Norway’s most beloved authors, Undset’s writing is absolutely enthralling — you won’t be disappointed.

03 | Peace Like a River by Leif Enger

Set in the 1960s Midwest, Reuben is a little boy who believes in miracles. When his older brother is accused of murder and escapes from prison, he and his family make it their mission to find him. A poetic, spiritual, and touching tale that you’ll want to return to for years to come.

04 | Gaudy Night by Dorothy Sayers

Gaudy Night, which is part of the Sayers’ beloved Lord Peter Wimsey series, centers around Harriet Vane, who is attending her Oxford University reunion. Soon, she begins finding oddly threatening notes and pranks — all while a whirl of romance ensues.

This endearing tale tells follows the story of an older man who moves to the southern city of Golden. Soon, he sets out on a mission of anonymous generosity. A heartwarming read about friendship, kindness, and purpose, Theo of Golden will leave you feeling happier for having picked it up.

Mother and daughter authors Sally and Sarah Clarkson offer an inspiring vision for what home can be — a haven from the chaos of the world, a place of belonging, and a environment where God’s goodness and beauty are made real every single day.

07 | A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens

If you haven’t yet picked this classic up, this is your sign. Dickens, easily considered one of the greatest writers of all time, weaves a tale set against the backdrop of the French Revolution, following the lives of those caught in the disaster and upheaval. Along with this, this classic story is filled to the brim with beautiful, significant themes like sacrifice and resurrection.

08 | The Bothers Karamazov by Fyodor Dostoevsky

This classic novel is part murder mystery, part exploration of family dynamics, and part courtroom drama, exploring deep, philosophical questions about morality, free will, and God. Filled with beautiful prose and compelling characters, this is surely worth the read.
