Here at Wallflower, we like to think we’ve fostered a community of readers who’d consider themselves lovers of literature. And while we truly love recommending our favorite books to you and curating all kinds of book lists for you to find your next read, we want to hear what you’ve been reading lately. Which is why we’ve decided to start a series of articles where we share which books our readers have been loving lately.

Below, find which books the readers of Wallflower have been loving lately, from classic literature, to young adult fiction, to touching memoirs.

 

01 | The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas

This classic 1846 adventure novel tells the tale of a man wrongfully thrown into prison, who eventually makes a dramatic escape. Brimming with themes of redemption, love, loss, and forgiveness, this is a book everyone will absolutely love.

02 | Sex and the City of God by Carolyn Weber

This memoir tells literature professor Carolyn Weber’s story of how, upon arriving at Oxford University to begin studying, she discovered the divine. Weber also writes about her journey from dating to marriage to motherhood through a series of personal, touching tales, and explores what life looks like when we allow God to be our first love.

03 | Journey to the River Sea by Eva Ibbotson

Set at the turn of the century in Brazil, this lovely historical adventure children’s novel centers around Maia, a young orphan who, to her excitement, is sent to live with distant relatives. Sadly, Maia’s relatives aren’t the loving people she hoped they’d be. Instead, she finds excitement elsewhere—on a journey down the Amazon.

04 | Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë

This classic 1847 novel is one you simply can’t miss. Jane Eyre tells the tale of a young orphaned woman who is sent to work at Thornfield Hall. Gentle yet strong, Jane soon falls for her mysterious, sarcastic, brooding employer, Mr. Rochester… only to discover a terrible secret that threatens Jan’es newfound happiness.

05 | I Capture the Castle by Dodie Smith

This sweet, touching, coming-of-age book centers around Cassandra, a 17-year-old girl who lives in a falling-apart English castle with her family. Cassandra spends her days filling journals with deep thoughts, honing her writing skills. Through her journal entries, we follow along as Cassandra falls in love.

06 | Anne of Green Gables by L. M. Montgomery

L. M. Montgomery’s beloved novel tells the tale of a spunky red-headed orphan whose vision for beauty, love for storytelling, and passion for life we can never get enough of. A charming, touching story about finding family, kindred spirits, and your place in the world, Anne of Green Gables isn’t one to miss.

07 | The Lady’s Confession by George MacDonald

08 | The Glass Hotel by Emily St. John Mandel

This mystery/psychological thriller novel takes readers on a journey after an alarming, threatening, cryptic message is left scrawled on the wall at a five-star lodge in Vancouver. We follow along as an international Ponzi scheme soon collapses and a woman disappears.

09 | The Girl Who Drank the Moon by Kelly Barnhill

Every year, a baby is left as an offering by the Protectorate for the witch in the nearby forest. But this witch is kind, bringing the babies to loving families. After she accidentally nourishes Luna with moonlight, Luna is given powers. The witch then decides to raise Luna herself. Eventually, Luna is called to protect the ones who’ve protected her—against the Protectorate.

10 | Perelandra (Space Trilogy, Book 2) by C. S. Lewis

You’ve likely read The Chronicles of Naria, but have you read any of Lewis’ other fictional works? Written in the dark, uncertain days of the beginning of World War II, in the trilogy’s second installment, Dr. Ransom is called to battle evil from another world in order to save the planet of Perelandra.

11 | An Everlasting Meal by Tamar Adler

This cookbook is not your average cookbook—you’ll find yourself slipping through it even when you’re not looking for a recipe. Throughout, Adler weaves in philosophical ideas and encouraging thoughts on how to feed our bodies well, while also offering tips on becoming a more frugal cook.
