7 Movies You’ll Want To Watch This Summer

Ah, summer — the time of year that draws us out of our shells, inviting us to enjoy the bright sun, the tasty barbecues, and the sweet company of our loved ones. We all have a bit more time for fun in the summer, time to relax by the pool with a cold drink, to go for a hike with a dear friend, and of course, to have a movie marathon or two.

And because summer is such a special time of year, we’ll want to watch movies that will reflect the season. So below, find 7 of the most summery movies to watch over the next couple of months.

The Parent Trap (1998)

Two identical twins stumble across each other at a summer camp after having been raised separately for nearly 12 years — never knowing they had a twin. From there, they concoct a plan to reunite their parents to live happily ever after as a family of four. Most of us have seen this heartwarming classic already, but it’s always worth revisiting, especially in these summer months! Starring Lindsay Lohan, Dennis Quaid, Natasha Richardson. Rated PG.

Roman Holiday (1953)

A European princess, over-scheduled and desperate for adventure, decides to go off on her own one night in Rome. An American reporter discovers her sleeping on a bench and, after learning her identity, bets his boss he can get an interview with her — but soon, a romance ensues. There’s nothing more summery than an adventure in Rome, don’t you think? Starring Audrey Hepburn, Gregory Peck.

Austenland (2013)

Jane is an off-beat woman who’s obsessed with all things Jane Austen (and particularly loves Colin Firth’s portrayal of Mr. Darcy, which, don’t we all?). She scrapes together all her savings to go to Austenland, a themed-resort in England, determined to find her own Mr. Darcy. She begins to wonder if all the good men are fictional… until love gets in the way. Full of jokes and references Austen fans will love, this is a wonderful summer watch for a girls’ night with your friends. Starring Kerri Russell, Jennifer Coolidge, Bret McKenzie. Rated PG-13.

In the Heights (2021)

Set in New York’s Washington Heights, we’re dropped in the middle of a sweet, vivacious, tight-knit community, made up of a bodega owner who dreams of more, a young girl visiting her humble home from her fancy college for the summer, and all the colorful characters in between. A movie-musical packed with so much talent, an incredible soundtrack, lively dance numbers, and heartfelt moments, this is one you’re sure to revisit. Starring Anthony Ramos, Rita Moreno, Stephanie Beatriz, Lin-Manuel Miranda. Rated PG-13.

Spider-Man: Far from Home (2019)

School’s out for the summer, and Peter Parker had been planning on having a normal summer, starting with a European trip with his class. But soon enough, he’s recruited for an important mission, and we follow along as he fights to keep the creatures threatening to take over from winning, as well as his true identity (Spider-Man) a secret from the world. For a sweet, exciting, memorable summer watch, there’s nothing better than this. Starring Tom Holland, Samuel L. Jackson, Zendaya, Jake Gyllenhaal. Rated PG-13.

Rear Window (1954)

In the middle of one of New York’s infamous summer heat waves, Jeff, a photographer who’s been relegated to a wheelchair for the next few weeks with a broken leg, takes to watching the occupants of a neighboring building through their windows. After witnessing a possible murder, Jeff becomes bent on finding out what happened. While Rear Window isn’t your typical heartwarming, cheery summer watch, there’s no denying it captures the essence of summer. Starring James Stewart, Grace Kelly.

The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants (2005)

A group of four best friends are about to spend their first summer apart. On a shopping trip, they find a pair of jeans that magically fit all of them perfectly — so they decide to share the jeans equally all summer, mailing them along with a letter, in order to stay in touch over the next few months. We follow along as they embark on adventures that can only happen in these wonderful summer months. A fun, lighthearted movie, this is sure to satisfy your summer movie needs. Starring Blake Lively, Alexis Bledel, America Fererra, Amber Tamblyn. Rated PG.
